What Cars Are Being Bought in China: BYD Remains the Leader, and Xiaomi is Already in the Top 4

Car Sales Data for the Past Week

From September 22 to 28, 2025, registrations continued to grow in the Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) market. According to China EV DataTracker, BYD remains the leader, registering 92,400 vehicles. This is 30.7% more than the previous week (70,700), but 12.7% less than the result from a year ago (105,800). Since the beginning of September, BYD has registered 279,930 vehicles.

Among BYD's sub-brands, Fang Cheng Bao showed 7,100 registrations (+31.5% per week, +370% year-on-year), Denza - 3,100 (+42.9%), Yangwang - about 200 cars.

Tesla sold 19,300 vehicles (+11.6% per week), but this is 14.6% less than last year. Since the beginning of September, Tesla has registered 66,340 vehicles in China. Its Shanghai plant recently started production of a new three-row version of the Model YL, designed to compete with large SUVs and minivans.

Leapmotor recorded a record 16,000 registrations (+24% compared to last week, +58% year-on-year). Xiaomi also strengthened its position with 11,000 vehicles (+189% year-on-year), Aito showed 10,700 registrations (+15%), Xpeng - 10,400 (+65%), and Nio Group entered the "10k club" for the first time - 10,800 vehicles (+62%).

Individual brands had mixed results: Li Auto maintained a level of 8,600 registrations (-39% year-on-year), Deepal - 6,300 (+12%), Onvo - 3,800, Firefly - 1,800.

For Nio, an important event of the week was the start of deliveries of the updated ES8 SUV. The start of sales on September 21 caused high demand: pre-orders are scheduled almost until the spring of 2026.

Thus, the electric vehicle market in China remains extremely dynamic against the backdrop of the holiday season and price competition. BYD maintains its leadership, but competitors from among the new players - Leapmotor, Xiaomi, Xpeng and Nio - are demonstrating record growth rates.
