Autopilot Under Suspicion: US Investigating Nearly 3 Million Teslas

The investigation covers almost the entire fleet of Elon Musk's company — the safety of people is in question

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched an investigation into 2.88 million Tesla electric vehicles equipped with the Full Self-Driving (FSD) system. The reason for the investigation was numerous accidents.

In total, the agency received 58 reports of traffic safety violations when using FSD.

Among them are six proven cases where a Tesla car on autopilot approached an intersection and continued driving through a red light, resulting in an accident, including those with injuries.

For NHTSA, this is the third investigation into driver assistance systems from Tesla. In October 2024, it concerned 2.4 million vehicles of the manufacturer, behaving inadequately in conditions of limited visibility, and in January 2025, the case affected 2.6 million electric vehicles due to problems with remote control.

As a result of the investigation, in extreme cases, NHTSA may require the recall of all Elon Musk's company cars to ensure safety.
