The next generation of the Toyota GR Corolla sports hatchback will likely undergo a major transformation: the signature three-cylinder engine will give way to a new 2.0-liter turbocharged engine. According to Motortrend, Toyota's powertrain division head Takashi Uehara said the new unit will produce around 400 hp, a third more than the current output.
This four-cylinder unit was unveiled at the Japan Mobility Show 2025 and will form the basis for several Toyota models, including the future GR Celica and Supra. The new engine is not only more powerful, but also easier to manufacture, with less vibration and better smoothness compared to the three-cylinder.
Despite the move to a more traditional format, the company reaffirms its commitment to the idea of sports cars with internal combustion engines. As Technical Director Hiroki Nakajima stated, Toyota will continue to produce internal combustion engines until the end, including versions running on carbon-neutral fuel.
