The first fully autonomous trucks may appear on Russian highways as early as 2027. This was announced by Minister of Transport Andrey Nikitin, noting that a key condition will be the adoption of a law on highly automated vehicles. Currently, unmanned vehicles are already operating on the M-11 and TsKAD, but there is an operator in the cabin. From 2026, similar trucks will begin testing the M12 highway.
According to the Ministry of Transport, 13 regions are participating in the experiment — from Moscow and St. Petersburg to Tatarstan, Bashkortostan, and the Perm Territory. The legal regime for testing has been extended until November 2028, which will increase the volume of traffic, the number of vehicles, and routes.
Nikitin emphasized that unmanned trucks can reduce fuel consumption, speed up delivery, and improve safety, since artificial intelligence-based systems operate continuously and eliminate human error. Currently, 90 vehicles are already running on federal highways, with a total mileage of 9.5 million kilometers.
