A bill on the legal sale of "vanity" car license plates has been submitted to the State Duma and will be considered in February 2026. According to TASS, the initiative belongs to the "New People" party and suggests that the registration department itself will set the price for attractive combinations. If adopted, the law could come into force as early as July 1, 2026.
Previously, several schemes for distributing such license plates were discussed - from holding auctions to selling them through the "Gosuslugi" portal. Now the document proposes a clear payment system through government bodies, which should eliminate gray schemes and allow you to buy "vanity" license plates directly from the state, and not through intermediaries.
By "vanity" we mean combinations with repeating numbers, mirror and sequential sets, as well as rare combinations of letters. Today, such numbers are obtained randomly, but an informal market has long been formed around them. Legalizing the sale will streamline the procedure, bring it out of the shadows and allow car owners to openly choose the desired combinations.
