Stricterfines for transporting children without car seats are coming into force in Russia. The law, signed by President Vladimir Putin in late December, comes into effect on January 9, 2026 - ten days after its official publication. The new measures aim to improve the safety of children in cars and strengthen the responsibility of drivers.
For ordinary drivers-individuals, the fine has been increased from 3 thousand to 5 thousand rubles. Officials now face a fine of 50 thousand rubles instead of the previous 25 thousand. A similar fine has been established for self-employed taxi drivers. The most significant increase affected legal entities: the amount of the penalty has doubled and now reaches 200 thousand rubles.
The initiative to tighten responsibility was introduced to the State Duma in the spring of last year and initially assumed a twofold increase in fines. The increase in sanctions became part of large-scale changes for motorists that came into force at the beginning of 2026. They affect not only the safety of transportation, but also issues of recycling fees, VAT, car loans, technical inspection and the procedure for extending driver's licenses.
