Chery Takes Over Nissan Plants: Chinese Auto Giant Gains Foothold in Africa

Deal closure is scheduled for mid-2026

Chinese company Chery and Japanese Nissan South Africa have signed an agreement for the sale of the Japanese automaker's production assets in Rosslyn, South Africa. The deal involves the transfer to Chery of the land plot, production buildings, and related infrastructure, including the adjacent stamping plant.

The final closing of the purchase is scheduled for mid-2026 after obtaining regulatory approvals.

Under the agreement, the majority of Nissan employees working at the site will receive offers of employment in the Chery SA division on comparable terms. The companies expect to retain the majority of jobs and ensure the continuity of the local supply chain.

After the completion of the deal, Nissan will maintain its presence in the South African market. The company will continue to sell and service vehicles, and in the 2026 financial year, it plans to launch several new models, including the Nissan Tekton and Nissan Patrol.
