Car license plates with the EKH letter code are becoming a thing of the past

A resident of Nizhny Novgorod was not returned "vanity" plates, citing federal restrictions and security risks

A resident of Nizhny Novgorod was denied the return of car license plates with the EKH letter code after their seizure. According to the Telegram channel Mash, the decision was explained by a "fresh order" related to security issues.

According to the source, the license plates were seized due to concerns about possible compromise of law enforcement officers. The Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the Nizhny Novgorod Region explained that the corresponding restrictions are provided for by federal laws No. 144 and No. 57. These norms, it is claimed, are aimed at preventing threats to both drivers themselves and law enforcement officials, including risks from foreign intelligence services and ill-wishers.

The EKH series of numbers appeared in 1996 and was originally intended for official vehicles of the Federal Security Service, the FSB, and high-ranking officials. Later, such numbers became available to ordinary motorists, but increased attention to their owners remained. In everyday life, the abbreviation EKH is often deciphered as "I Drive As I Want."

Currently, registration of EKH series numbers is no longer carried out. According to available data, such license plates may be completely withdrawn from circulation in the near future.
