The Stellantis concern has begun to return diesel versions of cars to the European market. We are talking about at least seven models of the Peugeot, Citroen and Opel brands. The decision is due to weak demand for electric vehicles and the easing of climate legislation in Europe.
According to Reuters, the company began to resume production of diesel versions of passenger cars and passenger vans in Europe at the end of 2025. This was not previously announced publicly.
The list of models includes Opel Astra, Peugeot 308 and DS 4 hatchbacks, Opel Combo van, seven-seater Peugeot Rifter and passenger Citroen Berlingo. The production of diesel versions of DS 7, Alfa Romeo Tonale, Alfa Romeo Stelvio crossovers and Alfa Romeo Giulia sedan is also maintained.
Stellantis told Reuters that they decided to keep diesel engines in the portfolio and, in some cases, expanded the range of power units, focusing on customer demand.
In 2015, diesel cars accounted for more than half of new car sales in Europe. By 2025, their share had decreased to 7.7%. For comparison, electrified models occupied 19.5% of the market. A number of automakers have completely abandoned diesel engines during this time.
