Andrei Kondrashov, head of the Laboratoriya avtorskoi zashchity ot ugona, listed the three main vulnerabilities of Chinese cars to car thieves. He spoke about this to Motor magazine.
The automotive expert noted that among the key risks are relaying the key signal, quickly programming a new key into the car's memory, and forced break-ins involving the replacement of electronic modules. According to him, car thefts are rare in China, so the protection of a number of models is inferior to their European counterparts.
The first vulnerability is the ability to relay the key signal from the owner's apartment to the car. If the key is in a jacket pocket and the jacket is hanging in the hallway, an intruder can transmit the signal to the car, while an accomplice can open it and start the engine. The second vulnerability is the quick programming of keys.
The expert explained that the equipment is connected through the diagnostic connector. In Chinese cars, programming a new key is possible without connecting to the manufacturer's server. The third method of stealing Chinese cars is the so-called applied method, when thieves use brute force. They break the driver's door lock and replace a number of electronic modules responsible for security.
