Lamborghini has abandoned the release of the Lanzador electric car due to lack of demand. According to Carscoops, citing an interview with CEO Stephan Winkelmann, customer interest in a fully electric model turned out to be "close to zero." Instead, the brand will focus on plug-in hybrids (PHEV).
We are talking about the Lamborghini Lanzador concept, which was previously considered as a future production electric car of the brand. According to Winkelmann, buyers expect Lamborghini to have expressive design, high power and, most importantly, a characteristic engine sound. In its current form, electric vehicles are not able to give such emotions.
Investing heavily in the development of electric vehicles when the market and customer base are not ready would be an expensive hobby and financially irresponsible to shareholders, customers [and] our employees and their families. Plug-in hybrids combine the best of both worlds, taking maneuverability and acceleration from low revs from electric motors and emotion and power from the internal combustion engine.
The decision was made at the end of last year after consultations with dealers and customers. In addition to Lanzador, plans to release a fully electric Lamborghini Urus crossover of the new generation in 2029 have been canceled. The company abandoned the experiment with the bestseller, which remains the financial mainstay of the brand.
