Ferrari's First Electric Car Name in Doubt

Mazda filed a trademark for Luce shortly after Ferrari announced the name for its "electric car"

Ferrari may face a problem due to the name of its first electric car. The Japanese company Mazda filed a trademark for Luce shortly after Ferrari revealed this name for the future model.

Ferrari first mentioned the name Luce in February 2026, showing the interior of the future electric car. Later, the company applied for trademark registration in Italy on February 9. However, on March 4, Mazda sent a similar application in Japan.

The name Luce has historical significance for Mazda. Under this name, from the 1960s to the early 1990s, the brand's flagship sedan was produced, known in some markets as the Mazda 929. The company also mentioned Luce when presenting the Mazda Vision Coupe concept in 2017.

If Mazda can secure the rights to the name in certain countries, Ferrari may face the need to change the name of the future electric car in some markets.

The first Ferrari electric car should debut in May. According to preliminary data, the model will receive four electric motors, acceleration to 100 km/h in about 2.5 seconds, a top speed of up to 310 km/h, and a range of approximately 530 km.
