The CJLR joint venture, created by Chery and Jaguar Land Rover, announced the transformation of Freelander into an independent brand. The first model of the new line was the Freelander 8, which was shown as a concept at the Beijing Auto Show.
The presented car remains a prototype: its doors don't even open. Nevertheless, the design already demonstrates the production direction. The exterior is made in a restrained style with references to classic models of the brand.
The technical basis is completely new. The Freelander 8 is built on the iMAX platform with an 800-volt architecture. It supports fast charging with power up to 350 kW. The model will receive electric and hybrid versions.
Major technology companies participated in the development. Huawei is responsible for autopilot systems and i-ATS off-road electronics. CATL supplies batteries, and Qualcomm provides the computing platform.
Despite visual similarities with previous models, the new Freelander 8 is focused on modern technologies. However, its real off-road capabilities have not yet been confirmed.
