Mercedes-Benz will bring back physical buttons to its interiors while retaining large screens. The decision was made after customer feedback demanding the return of convenient controls.
Over the past decade, automakers have actively replaced buttons with touchscreens. Mercedes-Benz has been a leader in this approach, focusing on large displays. However, as Matthias Geisen, a top manager at the company, stated, customers directly pointed out the shortcomings of this concept.
According to him, two years ago, users reported: "the ideas are good, but they are inconvenient to use." As a result, the company revised its approach. Future models will feature physical controls for key functions. This includes, in particular, the return of scrollable switches instead of touch panels on the steering wheel.
However, Mercedes will not abandon screens. The company considers them an important part of the user experience. Geisen noted that displays allow for flexible interface customization, including personalization – for example, displaying family photos.
The new approach involves combining screens and physical buttons. This solution is already used in the premium segment and is in demand among buyers. Mercedes intends to maintain a balance between digital technologies and familiar ergonomics.
