AMG brings back the V8 engine: the hybrid C63 couldn't withstand fan pressure and weight

Mercedes confirmed: first models to appear by the end of 2026

Mercedes-AMG head Michael Schiebe has officially confirmed the return of the V8 to the brand's lineup. The first models will be released by the end of 2026, starting with SUVs. After the sharp transition to a four-cylinder plug-in hybrid in the Mercedes-AMG C63, the brand faced a mixed reaction. Despite high power, the audience criticized the engine's character and increased weight. Now, AMG is effectively rethinking its strategy.

According to Schiebe, complex hybrid systems are too heavy for cars where emotions and handling are important. His key phrase: "If you need a light car, sometimes the best option is just a V8." This is a rare admission from a brand that has actively invested in PHEVs.

The evolution of the M177 Evo engine is expected – a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 with a flat crankshaft, already familiar from flagship Mercedes-Benz S-Class models. The AMG versions of the Mercedes-Benz GLE and Mercedes-Benz GLS are named as the first candidates.

There will be no complete abandonment: the Mercedes-AMG GLE53 and Mercedes-AMG E53 will remain for markets with strict emission standards. In parallel, AMG will continue to develop battery-powered models, including the future four-door GT.

The return of the V8 is a signal that even premium brands are rethinking the balance between electrification, weight, and emotional perception. For AMG, the sound, response, and character of the engine are once again part of the product, not just power figures.
