LEGO and Koenigsegg staged one of the most unusual premieres of the year. Instead of a traditional presentation of a new set, the companies built a full-size, drivable replica of the Sadair's Spear hypercar and sent it to the famous Goodwood Hillclimb. The result was a record for LEGO cars.
Behind the wheel was Koenigsegg factory test driver Marcus Lund, who previously set a track record in a real Sadair's Spear. During the run, the full-size car made of construction bricks reached 69 miles per hour (111 km/h), becoming the fastest drivable LEGO creation in the company's history. The previous record was only 50 km/h.
The scale of the project is no less impressive than its speed. The car required 327,906 LEGO elements to build. The total mass of the structure was about 1800 kg, although the construction bricks themselves account for only about 400 kg of weight. Development and assembly took over 9400 hours of work.
The engineers were not limited to external resemblance. The car received working doors, movable body panels, the signature Ghost Mode system, and even a key designed in the style of real Koenigsegg hypercars.
The record-breaking project is timed to coincide with the release of the LEGO Technic Koenigsegg Sadair's Spear (42232) set. The 1:8 scale model consists of 4104 parts and features a V8 engine, a nine-speed transmission, Triplex suspension, working steering, and a Ghost Mode mechanism that simultaneously opens the body panels and signature Koenigsegg doors. The set will cost $449.99 in the US (about 33 thousand rubles).
For LEGO, this is one of the most ambitious automotive projects in recent years. And for Koenigsegg, it's another opportunity to remind everyone that even marketing campaigns are turned into records by the brand.
