Toyota Motor announced that it expects to sell more than 5 million hybrid vehicles for the first time in its history during the 2026 calendar year. The company made this forecast during the publication of its financial results for the first quarter of fiscal year 2027.
According to Toyota's Chief Accountant Takanori Azuma, demand for hybrid vehicles continues to grow in almost all regions of the world, so the company is expanding the production of batteries for such models.
Demand for hybrids remains high, and their share continues to increase in many countries. In 2026, Toyota plans to sell more than 5 million hybrid vehicles for the first time.
Toyota remains the world's largest hybrid manufacturer since the launch of the Prius in 1997 – the first mass-produced car with a hybrid powertrain. Today, almost the entire brand lineup in the American market is offered in hybrid versions, and many of these versions are already outselling their gasoline counterparts.
At the same time, the company is preparing the next generation of hybrid technologies. Starting in 2027, Toyota will begin implementing new traction batteries at its plants in Japan. Initially, production lines will be designed for approximately 600,000 vehicles per year.
