Chery to Begin Road Testing Solid-State Batteries in 2027

The company plans to invest approximately $1.5 billion in the development of this technology

Chery intends to begin testing vehicles with all-solid-state batteries as early as 2027. This was announced by company chairman Yin Tongyue at the World Power Battery Conference in Yibin, China.

At the same time, the head of Chery specifically emphasized: the company will not install new technology on production cars until it is convinced of its safety. The same principle applies to other promising battery solutions.

Chery's own program is called Rhino S. In March, the company introduced a line of solid-state cells with a claimed energy density of 400 to 600 Wh/kg. According to the manufacturer's calculations, electric vehicles with such batteries will be able to travel up to 1500 km on a single charge.

Now Chery is preparing to move from laboratory and bench tests to testing the technology directly on vehicles. The Exeed ES8 should be the first model for road tests. At the same time, as early as the fourth quarter of 2026, the company plans to start installing Rhino batteries with a semi-solid electrolyte on cars – this is an intermediate option closer to modern technologies.

So far, Chery has reported achieving an energy density of 400 Wh/kg for its solid-state cells. The company previously stated a higher value of 600 Wh/kg for another version of the technology. Therefore, the promised 1500 km range should be considered a target, not a characteristic of a ready-made production car.
