General Motors has eliminated the automatic fuel door lock on the Corvette C8 for the 2026 model year. At first glance, the decision looks like a typical cost-cutting measure, but Corvette chief engineer Josh Holder explained it differently: removing the mechanism reduced the car's weight, shortened assembly time, and improved NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness) performance.

According to Holder, the electromagnetic lock actuator wasn't very useful: it could be forced open relatively easily, and the mechanism itself created additional noise. At a meeting with Corvette owners, the engineer also noted complaints about the characteristic click when the lock operated.

The fuel door itself hasn't disappeared: it now opens with a simple push. However, the Corvette uses a capless filler neck, so an open fuel door doesn't provide easy access to the fuel and doesn't make siphoning gasoline with a hose significantly easier.

The weight saving here is more about engineering optimization than making the Corvette faster. Removing a small electromechanical component is unlikely to noticeably affect acceleration or handling. However, eliminating an unnecessary actuator removes a potential point of failure and simplifies assembly.

The change is part of a broader Corvette redesign. For the 2027 model year, GM is preparing new power versions, including a 6.7-liter naturally aspirated V8 LS6 for the Stingray and Grand Sport, while the Grand Sport X will receive a hybrid powertrain with a total output of 721 hp.
