McLaren has officially confirmed the development of the brand's first-ever SUV. At the same time, the company announced an investment of £500 million in British manufacturing and engineering facilities. The project includes the construction of a new assembly plant and the expansion of existing sites.

For McLaren, this is not just a new model. For the first time, the company intends to independently develop and produce power units. As part of the program, two new engines and two transmissions will be created, which will be used in next-generation vehicles. Previously, the production of engines for serial McLaren cars was carried out by the British company Ricardo.

The SUV itself has only been shown at the concept project level, so its technical specifications have not been officially disclosed. However, it was previously reported that the model with the internal index P47 will have four doors, five seats, all-wheel drive, and a hybrid power plant with a V8. Production will be located in the UK. In addition to the new factory, McLaren will expand its production center in Woking and almost double the capacity of its plant in South Yorkshire, where carbon fiber monocoques are manufactured. The company expects to create at least 1,000 jobs by 2032, and the number of production personnel is expected to approximately double.

The appearance of the SUV is also associated with the scaling of the brand itself. Currently, McLaren produces about 2,000 cars per year, while the previous plan provided for 6,000 cars. The new factory should increase production capabilities and allow the company to expand its model range.

However, McLaren has not announced a transition to a fully electric SUV. The company is betting on hybrid technology: its own engine development should become part of a strategy designed for future generations of cars.
