According to ACEA, in the first eight months of 2026, 1,641,333 new electric vehicles were registered in the EU, compared to 1,634,733 cars with gasoline internal combustion engines. The difference was only 6,600 cars, but at the end of June, gasoline cars still outnumbered electric vehicles by 88,263 registrations.
The main turning point occurred in the summer. In August, Europeans registered 196,486 electric vehicles — 62.7% more than a year earlier. Sales of gasoline cars in the same month, on the contrary, decreased by 24.6%, to 133,816 cars.
As a result, the share of both types of powertrains for January–August was 21.7% each. At the same time, hybrids remain the largest category: they accounted for 36.6% of registrations, another 10% were plug-in hybrids. The combined share of gasoline and diesel decreased to 29%.
The growth of electric vehicles was primarily driven by large markets. In France, registrations increased by 74.2%, in Germany — by 53.1%, in Denmark — by 40.9%. However, the picture across Europe is uneven: in Italy, electric vehicles occupy only 8.1% of the market, in Spain — 10.2%, and hybrids are significantly more popular there.
