BYD has created its own fleet of car carrier vessels: the company now has eight vessels with a total annual capacity of over 1 million cars. The latest vessel, BYD Jinan, was commissioned last week. It took the automaker less than two years to create the fleet — the first car carrier, BYD Explorer No. 1, was delivered in January 2024.
All vessels are classified as RoRo (roll-on/roll-off) vessels, with cars driving on and off the decks independently. The capacity ranges from 7,200 to 9,000 cars depending on the model. The fleet includes: Explorer No. 1, Hefei, Changzhou, Shenzhen, Xi’an, Changsha, Zhengzhou, and Jinan.
Seven vessels are already actively transporting cars to various regions of the world. For example, BYD Hefei is unloading a batch in Europe, Xi’an is expected to arrive in Barcelona by the end of the week, and Shenzhen and Changsha are heading in the European direction.
BYD Zhengzhou this week transported right-hand drive cars manufactured in Thailand to the UK and is now heading to Belgium. This is the first export from BYD's Thai plant, which has a capacity of 7,000 cars per year.
