Modern Chinese Turbo Engines Are No Longer "Problematic"

The days of bad Chinese turbo engines are over 10 years ago

Yulia Trushkova, an expert at Rolf, told Rossiyskaya Gazeta that there is no need to be afraid of modern Chinese engines with turbocharging - the days of unreliable engines are long gone, more than ten years ago.

According to Trushkova, the main danger is not the country of origin, but incorrect maintenance and poor calibrations. Modern Chinese turbo engines are designed according to the same engineering principles as Japanese, German or Korean ones: high-quality materials, well-thought-out thermal management and sufficient safety margins are used. With proper care, such engines can easily travel 200–250 thousand kilometers without major repairs.

The engines are equipped with water-cooled CHRA turbochargers, which are easy to repair. Many elements of the power plant, including injectors, sensors and high-pressure fuel pumps, are identical to parts from global brands. To protect the piston group and turbine, torque is limited at 1500–2500 rpm, adaptive ignition timing control and cooled EGR are provided.

Electronic control units operate according to OBD-II/UDS standards and are compatible with conventional scanners, and the base of spare parts and consumables is wide. If the turbine fails, it is often sufficient to replace the cartridge, rather than the entire unit.
