A car at the price of a smartphone or laptop: how much did domestic cars cost in 2000

A lot has changed in a quarter of a century

In October 2000, prices for new cars seemed almost like a fantasy today. The cheapest car then was considered to be the "Oka" - only 1910 conventional units, that is, about 58 thousand rubles at the then exchange rate. The Izhevsk "Oda" was slightly more expensive, estimated at 2380 cu, or 72.6 thousand rubles.

Even the AvtoVAZ "classics" were inexpensive: the VAZ-21047 station wagon cost 3130 cu (95.5 thousand rubles), and the "five" - even less, 2780 cu. In one car dealership, you could see both old and new models: for example, the VAZ-2115 cost 5380 cu, and the pre-styling "ninety-ninth" - 4410.

Interestingly, the "tenth family" was then considered progressive, but cost even less: the VAZ-2110 was offered for 5050 cu, and the VAZ-2112 hatchback - for 5910. The most expensive "Lada" was considered to be "Nadezhda" - the first domestic minivan with all-wheel drive, for which they asked for 7210 cu.

Against this background, the GAZ-3110 could be taken for 4100 cu, and the "nomenclature" GAZ-3102 already cost 6760. Moskvich cars cost from 2500 to 3140 cu, but the top was the luxury "Kalita" for 37 thousand - almost like a BMW 323i. UAZs were also not scary with the price: the basic UAZ-31512 SUV cost 2480 cu, and the short-base 3160 - 6980. Even the new "Gazelle" cost 5990 cu.
