The Russian new car market in 2025 significantly decreased. About 1.496 million new cars up to three years old were sold in the country, which is 19% less than the year before. This statistic was provided by the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation.
The commercial segment suffered the most. Sales of trucks plummeted by 53% to 57.6 thousand units. Bus sales decreased by 31% and amounted to 14.3 thousand vehicles. Demand for light commercial vehicles decreased by 24% to 107 thousand units.
The passenger car market turned out to be more stable than the others, but it also went into negative territory. In 2025, 1.317 million new passenger cars were sold in Russia, which is 15% less than in 2024. Experts attribute the decline in demand to rising prices, higher loan rates, and buyer caution.
At the same time, the end of the year showed signs of recovery. In December, dealers sold 155.5 thousand new cars, which is 9% more than in November, and 6% more than in December 2024. This partially smoothed out the overall decline.
Separately, the Ministry of Industry and Trade noted the growth in the share of Russian-made cars. Over the year, the market for domestic cars exceeded 832.1 thousand units, which is slightly - by 0.2% - higher than the level of 2024. In December, sales of cars manufactured in the Russian Federation reached 92.7 thousand units, an increase of 22% year-on-year. As a result, the share of Russian equipment at the end of the month approached 60%.
