Chinese BYD has become the world's number one seller of electric vehicles by the end of 2025. Over the year, the company sold 4.6 million cars, of which 2.26 million were fully electric models. This result allowed BYD to overtake all competitors, including Tesla, Bloomberg reports.
Tesla sold 1.63 million electric vehicles in 2025, 9% less than the year before, when the figure reached 1.79 million cars. At the same time, the company sold only about 50 thousand Cybertruck, Model S, and Model X vehicles throughout the year, which underscores the shift in demand towards more affordable models and increased pressure from competitors.
Tesla's sales have declined in China and Europe. In these markets, the American company is being actively squeezed by Chinese brands offering electric vehicles at lower prices and with rich equipment. The situation has also worsened in the United States after the cancellation of the $7,500 tax credit for the purchase of electric vehicles, which directly impacted demand.
However, BYD's growth has also begun to slow down. The company faces fierce competition within China, with Geely, Xiaomi, and other automakers behaving more and more aggressively.
