A pre-production crossover Hyundai Santa Fe of the new generation completely burned down during road tests on a highway in Ulsan. The incident occurred during the vehicle's inspection before the launch of the updated version of the model into mass production.
The fire started in the engine compartment while driving. The driver managed to stop the car and leave the cabin, there were no casualties. Fire crews arrived at the scene. Seven pieces of equipment were involved in extinguishing the fire. The fire was completely extinguished in about 40 minutes.
As a result of the fire, the front of the crossover burned out almost completely. The damage affected the engine compartment, suspension elements and electrical wiring.
The Hyundai press service has not yet disclosed the official causes of the incident. Company representatives said that experts are studying the circumstances of the incident.
According to local media, the fire may have been related to testing a new power plant, which the automaker is considering to expand the Santa Fe engine range.
Hyundai previously announced plans to update the Santa Fe in 2026, focusing on hybrid and economical modifications. The results of the investigation may affect the future composition of engines and safety system settings.
