Mercedes-Benz is preparing to introduce an updated version of the flagship S-Class sedan on January 29. The company reports that as part of the upgrade, engineers have changed about 2,700 parts and components.
One of the main innovations will be seat belts with a heating function. The system is being developed by ZF. Previously, this option was not used in production cars.
The design of the lap and shoulder belts uses built-in heating elements. They are able to raise the temperature of the material from 10 degrees Celsius to body temperature in about four minutes. Previously, Mercedes had already introduced heated seats, steering wheel and armrests. Heated belts have become the next stage in the development of the comfort system in the cabin.
The manufacturer expects that warm seat belts will motivate drivers to fasten their seat belts more often and secure the belt more tightly on the body. In winter, the system may encourage drivers to remove bulky outerwear, which improves the fit of the belt and increases the effectiveness of protection in an accident.
