Vietnamese VinFast Returns to the US After Sales Failure

The company will resume factory construction and plans to start production in 2028

Vietnamese automaker VinFast will return to the implementation of the plant project in North Carolina. Work will resume later in 2026 after a pause that lasted more than 18 months. Initially, the company announced the site in the US in March 2022 and expected to launch production by mid-2024. Then the deadlines were postponed to 2025, and later the project was completely suspended.

Despite modest results in the US — less than 1,500 cars sold in 2025 — the company has not abandoned its plans. According to the financial report, the start of production is still scheduled for 2028. At the same time, VinFast is preparing to launch factories in India and Indonesia.

Sales growth is observed in other markets. In the fourth quarter of 2025, the company sold 86,557 cars, which is 127% more than the previous quarter and 63% more year-on-year. At the end of the year, sales reached 196,919 cars, which is more than double the figure for 2024.

Revenue in the fourth quarter increased by 138.9% to 39.4 trillion dong ($1.5 billion). At the same time, the net loss amounted to 35.2 trillion dong ($1.3 billion), an increase of 15%.

The company stated that it continues to assess expansion opportunities in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa. The growth strategy is associated with the global development of the Vingroup group and the use of its resources and partnerships.

VinFast faces criticism in the American market. The VF 8 and VF 9 models received negative reviews. In particular, VF 8 owners filed a lawsuit claiming that the DC charging speed does not exceed 2 kW with the declared 6.6 kW and above, which means that a full charge can take more than 24 hours.
