Volkswagen is revising its electric vehicle strategy after criticism of the ID models, according to company head Thomas Schäfer. He noted that the Volkswagen ID.3 and Volkswagen ID.4 "were not real Volkswagens." According to him, the company changed its approach to design and interfaces too abruptly, which caused a negative reaction from customers.
Since 2022, Volkswagen has been adjusting its course. In particular, the company is simplifying interiors and returning to familiar solutions. Abandoning touch interfaces without buttons and complex innovations has become part of the new strategy.
Technical Director Kai Grünitz confirmed that the new models will be focused on customer expectations. The company plans to use familiar names and a more traditional design.
The immediate plans include the affordable ID Every1 and ID Polo electric vehicles, as well as the ninth generation Golf. Volkswagen intends to combine technology and simplicity while maintaining brand recognition.
Management hopes that the updated 2026 models will restore customer confidence and improve the perception of the brand.
