Old Ford Photos Get a New Lease on Life

The company is using AI to add color to archival images

Ford has begun an experiment with coloring images from the Ford Heritage Vault, an archive that houses more than 350,000 negatives. They reflect the car development process from the mid-1950s to the early 21st century and are stored in temperature-controlled conditions.

Most of the pictures are in black and white. With the help of AI, they are converted to color to bring the appearance of the cars closer to reality. The project showcased a 1963 Ford Mustang clay model in Intense Lime Yellow Metallic, a Ford Mustang Fastback in Grabber Blue Metallic, and a 1966 concept in Race Red.

Separately, the Ford Mustang I is presented, which received the color Orange Fury Metallic instead of the original white. The project remains experimental, but the company notes that AI helps to more accurately visualize historical models and makes the archive more visual.
