FIA updated the 2026 Formula 1 rules after the first three races

Energy limits, MGU-K output, and the super clipping mode have been changed

The FIA made changes to the regulations ahead of the 2026 Miami Grand Prix. The main focus is on electric energy management and the operation of the MGU-K system.

The key change concerns super clipping — a mode in which the internal combustion engine helps generate electrical energy. The maximum recuperation level has been increased from 250 to 350 kW. This will allow the car to charge the battery more efficiently at high speed and reduce power losses on the straights.

In qualifying, the energy storage limit has been reduced from 8 to 7 megajoules. This will reduce dependence on electric drive and force drivers to rely more on the engine, which will lead to longer lap times.

The distribution of MGU-K output has also been revised. In acceleration zones it remains at 350 kW, while on other sections it is reduced to 250 kW. Additionally, race boost has been limited to +150 kW.

The changes are aimed at reducing the speed difference between cars. This should improve safety and reduce the risk of accidents.

In wet conditions, the preheating temperature of intermediate tires has been increased, and energy delivery will be limited. An automatic start-assist system is also being introduced if the car lacks sufficient power. The updates are targeted in nature, but are intended to eliminate the identified problems in the operation of hybrid systems.
