Volkswagen Postpones Electric Golf: Company Fears Repeating ID Line Mistake

The head of the company admitted: current models are sufficient, and the legendary hatchback is too risky to convert to batteries for now

Volkswagen unexpectedly put the electric Golf project on hold. Company head Thomas Schäfer stated that the brand “does not need” such a model either now or in 2028, although its launch was previously considered almost a done deal.

The reason is not only economic. The Golf remains one of Volkswagen's main brand symbols, and the company fears that a fully electric version might not meet customer expectations. Especially after the mixed reaction to the first models of the ID family, which were criticized for their complex interface and the loss of the “character” of classic Volkswagens.

Currently, VW is focusing on expanding its existing ID line. In the coming years, the company will introduce more affordable models like the ID. Polo and the updated ID.3 Neo. The electric Golf will only appear after the concern transitions to the new SSP platform, which Audi and Porsche will receive first.

For the market, this is an important signal: even the largest manufacturers are no longer willing to convert iconic models to batteries at any cost. Especially against the backdrop of slowing demand for electric vehicles in Europe and pressure from Chinese brands. Volkswagen recently warned of possible fines of up to $1.75 billion due to insufficient sales of zero-emission vehicles.
