Mazda is working on a new proprietary hybrid powertrain and is already making it clear that it does not intend to copy the approach of segment leaders. The company believes that many modern hybrids are too focused on fuel economy at the expense of driving feel.
According to Vineet Kulkarni, Head of Marketing at Mazda Australia, the brand's engineers intend to create a system that will maintain the familiar connection between driver and car. He stated that existing hybrid technologies often provide excellent efficiency but do not always deliver driving pleasure.
This refers to the new Skyactiv-Z hybrid complex, which will debut in the next generation Mazda CX-5. The company promises not only improved fuel efficiency but also more natural throttle responses and a transmission operation that will feel more familiar to the driver.
Mazda's statement seems particularly noteworthy given the brand's current model range. For example, the hybrid CX-50 uses a Toyota powertrain, which many experts praise for its efficiency but criticize for its CVT operation and less emotional character compared to traditional Mazda models.
In fact, the company is trying to solve one of the main problems of modern hybrids. In recent years, manufacturers have learned to significantly reduce fuel consumption, but many cars have become less engaging to drive. Mazda hopes to prove that efficiency and driving pleasure do not necessarily have to contradict each other.
