Don't pour this into the tank: auto expert explained how long gasoline can be stored

Sergey Ponomarev: "Fuel retains normal properties for about three months"

Many motorists store a supply of gasoline for months, believing that nothing will happen to the fuel. However, this is a dangerous misconception. After just a few months, gasoline gradually begins to lose its properties, warned Sergey Ponomarev, technical trainer at the international car service network Fit Service.

According to him, although according to GOST, gasoline in a sealed container can be stored for up to a year, such terms are possible only under warehouse conditions - at a stable temperature, without sunlight, and without constant opening of the container.

In a metal or special plastic canister, stored in a cool place, gasoline retains normal properties for approximately 3–6 months. After this, the risk of engine starting problems, detonation, and carbon buildup increases.

Modern turbo engines and direct injection engines are especially sensitive to old fuel. Due to the deterioration of gasoline quality, errors in the mixture composition, unstable engine operation, and injector contamination may occur.

If gasoline has been stored for about a year, it is better to use it only after mixing with fresh fuel and not to pour it into modern cars. Saving on an old canister can result in expensive repairs to the fuel system.
