Amazon-backed company Zoox has unveiled an updated version of its fully autonomous robotaxi. The changes affected both the exterior and interior of the vehicle, and the next important milestone will be the launch of mass production at its California facility.
The first prototype of the autonomous shuttle was shown back in 2020. Since then, the company has collected feedback from more than 500,000 passengers who used free rides in Las Vegas and San Francisco, and has also taken into account test results and operational experience.
The main changes affected the interior. The seats received additional padding and a more ergonomic shape, which should increase comfort during rides. Cupholders have increased in size, the multimedia system screen has become brighter, and wireless charging now has a ribbed surface, which prevents smartphones from slipping during movement.
The interior is also designed in a new color scheme with a predominance of light green and gray shades. According to the developers, a calmer palette makes the cabin visually more spacious and helps passengers relax during the ride.
In addition, the finishing materials for the floor, cupholders, and wireless charging pad have been updated. They have become more wear-resistant and at the same time make it easier to find forgotten items – for example, smartphones or bags.
Outwardly, the changes were less noticeable, but they gained practical significance. Since Zoox has a completely symmetrical design without a traditional hood and trunk, it can be difficult to determine where the front of the car is.
To solve this problem, engineers changed the operation of the light reflectors, which now allow for quicker differentiation between the front and rear of the robotaxi. Their shape and placement were also redesigned for better visibility.
Another innovation is the modernized speakers and microphones near the doors. This will improve communication between passengers, Zoox support, and emergency services when needed.
All presented changes will be included in the production version of the robotaxi, the production of which will soon begin at the company's factory in Hayward, California. After the plant reaches full capacity, Zoox expects to produce up to 100 vehicles per week.
Increased production will allow for the expansion of service operations. In addition to San Francisco and Las Vegas, autonomous shuttles are planned to be launched on the roads of Austin and Miami, and then Dallas and Phoenix.
Currently, Zoox operates under research permits from US regulators and can only transport passengers for free. To launch a full-fledged commercial service, the company still needs to obtain final approval from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
