American bloggers from the YouTube channel Airborne Entertainment have once again embarked on an unusual automotive journey. Their goal is to drive a 1981 Volkswagen Dasher to Florida, using only used vegetable oil as fuel.

The car was not chosen by chance. The old diesel Dasher had been idle for over ten years, after which it received a system allowing it to run on purified vegetable oil. According to the project authors, the previous owner never managed to test the modification in real conditions.

The participants of the journey set several strict rules for themselves. They started with no money, refused to buy fuel, and decided to obtain oil only legally – by negotiating with restaurants, processing used oil, or collecting it from containers intended for disposal.

The first kilometers confirmed that the trip would not be easy. One McDonald's restaurant refused to give away used oil, but soon a random passerby donated $40 to the travelers. A Chinese restaurant turned out to be a real stroke of luck, where they managed to get enough oil for further travel. It is purified right on the road using a homemade filtration system installed on the car's roof.

To cover some of the expenses, the bloggers also collect scrap metal along the roads and turn it in for recycling. However, after several hours of work, they only managed to earn about $20, so for most of the journey, the project relies on the help of caring people. Along the way, travelers were given free food, oil, and other necessary items.

Technical problems are also not uncommon. The old Volkswagen has overheated several times, and the reverse gear, according to the authors, works extremely unstably. Nevertheless, the car continues to move.

Although the ultimate goal is to reach Florida, the experiment itself turned out to be no less interesting than its result. The project shows that an old diesel car, with appropriate modifications, is capable of running on alternative fuel, and also demonstrates the important role that equipment reliability, ingenuity, and the help of random people play in such journeys.
