Patents for Chery's new compact pickup truck have appeared online, published in South African registration documents. Although the manufacturer has not yet officially confirmed the model's development, the documents provide a fairly complete picture of the future vehicle.
The new model will feature a unibody construction and will be built on the T1X platform, which is already used in a number of Chery crossovers. This approach distinguishes it from classic body-on-frame pickups and makes it a direct competitor to the Ford Maverick, as well as other urban models in this class.
The design is executed in the brand's modern style: a narrow LED strip across the entire width of the front, massive protective overlays, a short cargo bed, and a four-door cabin. At the rear, there are LED lights integrated into a light strip, as well as a vertical tailgate.
Technical specifications have not yet been disclosed, but a wide range of powertrains is expected. Base versions may receive 1.6 and 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engines, while one of the key modifications will be the Chery Super Hybrid (CSH) plug-in hybrid. This system combines a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine, an electric motor, and a traction battery, providing up to 90 km of electric range. Front-wheel and all-wheel drive are also expected, and the Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function will allow the car to be used as an external power source.
According to preliminary information, Chery will also release a new crossover from the Tiggo family based on this architecture. The compact pickup's premiere may take place within the next 12 months, after which the model will enter the markets of China, South America, South Africa, and a number of Asia-Pacific countries.
