The Volkswagen Group may significantly reduce its model range in the coming years. According to the German publication Bild, the company is discussing discontinuing several vehicles with low sales. These plans have not yet been officially confirmed, but the concern's management has already announced a large-scale cost-cutting program.
Among the most likely candidates for production cessation are the Volkswagen Jetta and Volkswagen Taos. While the disappearance of the Jetta seems logical given the decline in demand for classic sedans, the potential discontinuation of the compact crossover Taos came as a surprise. In the second quarter of 2026, Taos sales in the US decreased by almost 44%, totaling 7,794 vehicles, while the Jetta sold 15,949 units.
According to Bild, the revision of the model lineup may affect other brands within the concern. Potentially vulnerable models include the Škoda Fabia, Cupra Raval, coupe-like Audi Q5 Sportback and Audi Q6 e-tron Sportback, as well as the Porsche Cayenne Coupe. In addition, plans for the release of gasoline versions of the Porsche 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman remain in question, and the electric Porsche Taycan is also being considered as one of the possible candidates for discontinuation after a decline in global sales.
Bild estimates that optimizing the model range could save the concern approximately 6.5 billion euros by 2031. However, a final decision has not yet been made. Volkswagen Product Communications Director Stefan Voswinkel, commenting on the publication, stated that the company does not comment on rumors and future plans for model range development.
If the information is confirmed, it will be one of the largest revisions of the Volkswagen Group's product strategy in recent years and will show that even large global automakers are increasingly focusing not on expanding their assortment, but on concentrating resources around the most in-demand models.
