Toyota may be preparing a new generation of the Probox wagon, which has remained one of the most popular commercial and family vehicles in Japan for over two decades. According to the Japanese publication Car Repo, the model's premiere is expected in late 2027 or early 2028.
The current Toyota Probox (XP160) has been produced since 2014 and recently received an update for the 2026 model year. It brought improved safety systems and minor interior changes, but the car's design itself remains the same and is noticeably inferior to modern brand models.
The new Probox may move to the TNGA-B platform, which is already used on the Toyota Yaris, Yaris Cross, and Aqua. The architecture should make the body stiffer, reduce the car's weight, and improve handling, while retaining one of the model's main advantages – a low, flat cargo floor.
It is expected that the wagon will retain its practical angular body but will receive modern LED optics, new paint options, and a more contemporary design. The 1.5-liter engine will most likely remain in the engine range, but the hybrid powertrain will become more efficient and economical thanks to a new electric component.
However, Toyota itself has not yet confirmed the development of a new generation of the model. In addition, photos of test prototypes have not yet appeared in the public domain, so the published information should be considered preliminary.
Despite this, interest in a possible successor remains high. The Probox has long earned a reputation as one of Japan's most reliable and practical wagons, and the transition to a modern platform could allow the model to remain competitive for many years to come.
