Daihatsu has revised the concept of the new Copen. While after the debut of the Vision Copen concept in 2023, it was expected that the model would move into the class of regular cars, now the focus is once again on the Japanese kei car segment. At the same time, engineers have retained the main technical idea – the transition from front-wheel drive to rear-wheel drive.

It is the new layout that could be the main event for fans of compact sports cars. For a kei car with strict size and weight restrictions, a longitudinal engine arrangement and rear-wheel drive is an extremely complex engineering solution. This scheme allows for optimizing weight distribution, making steering more informative, and increasing driving pleasure.

According to preliminary data, the new Copen will retain its 660 cc three-cylinder turbo engine with 64 hp. Instead of the previous five-speed manual transmission and CVT, a six-speed manual and a classic six-speed automatic are expected.

The design will also change. The new model will feature an appearance with references to the first generation Copen from 2002: round headlights, a more laconic body, and the abandonment of interchangeable Dress Parts body panels. At the same time, the signature Active Top retractable hardtop, capable of opening in about 20 seconds, will remain in the equipment.

Despite retaining the kei car dimensions (3395×1475 mm), the car will be about 50 mm lower, and the wheelbase will increase by approximately 35 mm. This solution should improve stability at high speeds and make room for the new transmission.

The interior is expected to feature a digital instrument cluster, a modern multimedia system, and higher quality trim materials. However, the layout will remain two-seater, and the sports seats will better secure the driver during active driving.

The official premiere of the production version is expected in March 2027. If the project retains the stated characteristics, the new Daihatsu Copen could become an almost unique offering on the market – a compact open sports kei car with rear-wheel drive after the departure of the Honda S660.
