Audi has not yet put an end to the history of the five-cylinder engine. Audi Sport head Rolf Michl stated that the company continues to evaluate options for the further use of the 2.5 TFSI.

For the current Audi RS3, this engine develops 400 hp and 500 Nm. The 2480 cm³ engine works with a seven-speed S-tronic robot and an all-wheel drive system with torque distribution between the rear wheels. The RS3 accelerates to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds.

The problem is not the technical feasibility of keeping the engine, but the economics. Audi will need to significantly refine the 2.5 TFSI to meet stricter environmental requirements. At the same time, the five-cylinder engine is used only in a relatively small number of cars, so it is difficult to recoup the investment.

Previously, Audi confirmed that the current five-cylinder RS3 would continue to be produced outside of Europe, while the European version was expected to end its life cycle by mid-2027.

Now another option is being considered – to keep the engine for another generation. One way to reduce development costs is to increase the number of models using the 2.5 TFSI. In particular, the possibility of a five-cylinder engine appearing in the future Volkswagen Golf R is being discussed, but there is no official decision on this yet.
