Chery announced a recall of 8,878 Omoda 5 crossovers in Malaysia after an incident on October 6, 2026, in Johor Bahru. The car's rear axle, along with the wheels, detached while driving. According to the manufacturer, no one was injured.

The inspection revealed a potential issue with the weld joints of the rear suspension's trailing arms: their strength might be insufficient under extreme loads. The campaign affects C and H variants. Owners will be offered free diagnostics and, if necessary, replacement of parts. You can check a specific car's participation in the recall by VIN on the Chery Malaysia website.

Following the incident, the Malaysian Road Transport Department JPJ temporarily suspended type approval for the Omoda 5 and registration of new vehicles. The regulator also demanded that all potentially affected vehicles be identified and that the production, assembly line, and rear axle parts supplier be inspected.

This is the second such incident with the Omoda 5 in Malaysia. In 2024, Chery organized an inspection of 600 cars after a similar incident. At that time, the cause was attributed to incorrect calibration of welding equipment; defective parts were found in 60 vehicles produced on August 15, 2023. It has not yet been confirmed whether the current case is related to the same cause.

European Omoda 5s use a multi-link rear suspension instead of the torsion beam installed on the cars subject to recall in Malaysia. Chery has also initiated additional checks of vehicles from the same production batch in China and other regions. Therefore, the company will make final conclusions about the geography of the possible defect after the investigation.
