The Legend of the USSR Lives On: Why the MAZ-537 Still Carries Tanks and Missiles

Tractor payload capacity - up to 65 tons

The heavy military tractor MAZ-537, created in the USSR in the late 1950s, continues to operate in the army and civilian sector after more than six decades. The vehicle is used to transport tanks, missile systems, engineering equipment and oversized cargo; the model's longevity is associated with the simplicity of the design and a large margin of safety.

How the MAZ-537 Was Created

The Special Design Bureau of the Minsk Automobile Plant developed the MAZ-537 in 1959. Engineers were tasked with creating a tractor for transporting heavy tracked vehicles and missile platforms. Serial production started in the early 1960s.

During the design, the developers incorporated a high service life for components and assemblies. The design received a reinforced frame, powerful suspension, and protection of the main systems from overloads and vibrations.

Technical Capabilities of the Tractor

The MAZ-537 is equipped with a 12-cylinder diesel engine with a power of 525 hp. All-wheel drive on eight wheels and a hydromechanical transmission ensured stable operation on off-road conditions.

The tractor is capable of transporting cargo weighing up to 65 tons. The vehicle confidently moves through sand, snow, and muddy ground, maintaining control even when fully loaded.

Role in the Army and at Special Facilities

During the Soviet period, the MAZ-537 was used to deliver intercontinental missiles, launchers, and tanks to deployment sites. Tractors worked at closed training grounds, airfields, and storage bases.

After the collapse of the USSR, the equipment remained in service with Russia and a number of other countries. Military units continue to operate the vehicles after major repairs and partial modernization.

Application in the Civil Sphere

Today, the MAZ-537 is also used in civil projects. Tractors transport power equipment, turbines, transformers, and elements of bridge structures.

Experts note that with regular maintenance, the equipment remains in working condition for decades. The safety margin allows the vehicle to be operated in harsh climatic conditions without serious loss of resources.
