GAC Comments on High-Profile Accident Involving GAC GS8 Flagship

Driver's Confidence in Electronics Led to Fatality

GAC Motor Rus has commented on the accident that occurred in the Nizhny Novgorod region in November 2024. The driver of a GAC GS8, traveling in the right lane with adaptive cruise control engaged, did not react to a truck parked in the lane, relying on the electronics. However, neither the adaptive cruise control, nor the forward collision warning system, nor the braking assistance worked as the driver had hoped, which led to a collision with the truck and the death of a passenger.

The driver claims that the accident was entirely the fault of the car due to the failure of the systems, but GAC representatives in their commentary point out that cruise control is a comfort option, not a safety feature, and the driver must in any case monitor the road and react to unusual situations arising on the road.

GAC Motor Rus expresses its condolences to those affected by the accident. Regarding the issue of the driver's and the system's share of responsibility for the incident, we would like to emphasize that adaptive cruise control is a system primarily aimed at more comfortable driving. It is designed to help the driver maintain a set speed and distance to the vehicle in front. This system is not a safety system, obstacle detector, or collision warning system. The driver must monitor the traffic situation and is responsible for the speed and distance to other vehicles. GAC Motor Rus strongly recommends that drivers always remain vigilant, especially when driving in high-traffic conditions and difficult visibility conditions.

The expert examination established that the average human reaction time of 0.6 seconds would have been sufficient to avoid the collision. The driver's lawyers are insisting on a re-examination of the incident.
