End of a 36-Year Era: Subaru Legacy Production Halted

The last car rolled off the assembly line on September 12

In Lafayette, Indiana, the American city where production began in 1989, the story of the Subaru Legacy model ended on September 12, 2025. Initially, the SIA (Subaru of Indiana Automotive) plant was a joint venture with Isuzu, but in 2022 the partner changed, and in addition to Subaru, the Toyota Camry was also assembled there.

During the model's existence, the Indiana plant produced approximately 1.4 million Legacy vehicles of all seven generations. Of these, 1,056,056 were sedans and 342,938 were station wagons. The decline in interest in recent years was expected against the backdrop of the general trend where buyers more often choose "crossovers." Confirmation of this is the sales figures. For example, in 2024, only 19,951 cars were sold, which is 23% less than in 2023.

For our company and our employees, this is a moment full of both sadness and hope. But we are optimistic about the future. Localizing the production of the gasoline and hybrid Forester in the US will allow us to respond more quickly to market demands for one of our core models and integrate advanced hybrid technologies into our production processes.
Scott Brand, president of Subaru of Indiana Automotive

By the end of October, the last car of another model, the Outback, will roll off the assembly line at the same plant, returning to its roots in Japan. They will be replaced by the new Forester, and a hybrid version of this model will be added by the spring.
