Honda Prelude Reboot Becomes a Super Hit

Demand Significantly Exceeds Supply

The revived Honda Prelude has unexpectedly become a hit in the Japanese domestic market, primarily attracting older buyers. In just one month after the start of sales, demand exceeded expectations eightfold: instead of the planned 300 cars, Honda received about 2,400 orders. Some dealers even temporarily stopped accepting new applications due to a shortage of cars, and the company had to increase production volumes to reduce delivery times.

The main audience of the new Prelude is drivers aged 50-60 who are looking for a comfortable and stylish coupe. According to Honda, the most popular colors are white (63%), gray (16%), black (11%), and red (10%). The model's price in Japan starts at 6,179,800 yen, which is equivalent to approximately $41,000, and the exclusive two-tone version for 6,480,100 yen (about $43,000) is completely sold out.

The Prelude is built on the Civic platform and equipped with a hybrid system similar to that used in the Civic Hatchback, but styled as a coupe. Despite the lack of a manual transmission, the car is positioned as a sporty but more comfortable solution, aimed at a mature audience.

In the US, the new Prelude will appear by the end of autumn at a price of about $40,000. The model is unlikely to be a direct competitor to the Toyota GR86 or Mazda MX-5, but will occupy a niche between dynamic coupes and everyday hybrids.
