The Russian government has announced sanctions against the French automaker Renault. The decree was signed by Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin. According to the document, the company has been added to the list of legal entities with which any transactions, including foreign trade operations, are prohibited.
The reason for the decision was reports of Renault's plans to establish the production of unmanned aerial vehicles in Ukraine in collaboration with a local defense company. According to media reports, the production of equipment is expected to be organized near the combat zone.
The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that such actions by the French concern are seen as an attempt to compensate for the loss of positions in the Russian market. As a reminder, Renault completely left Russia in 2022, transferring its assets, including AvtoVAZ, to state ownership.
The new restrictions are part of a broader review of economic relations with Western automakers, many of whom previously held a significant share of the Russian market but were displaced by Asian brands after 2022.
