Tesla has introduced the most affordable version of the Model Y Standard crossover, which has become an unexpected cause for controversy. With a price of 39,990 euros and a range of 534 km according to the WLTP cycle, the new product is designed to strengthen the company's position in Europe. However, the main topic of discussion was not the cost, but the roof.
Unlike more expensive modifications, the Model Y Standard has lost its open panoramic section. The glass panel remained, but it was covered from the inside with a dense lining. As Tesla's Vice President of Engineering Lars Moravy explained, the glass in this version does not have a reflective coating, which reduces the efficiency of thermal insulation. Therefore, the engineers decided to close it, improving acoustic comfort and reducing the heating of the cabin. According to Moravy, many buyers, on the contrary, wanted a "deaf ceiling", considering it more comfortable.
Interestingly, installing a metal roof would have cost more, since the Model Y platform was originally designed for glass. To avoid redesigning the structure, Tesla simply modified the existing element.
