Main Signs That the Timing Belt Is About to Break

You need to pay attention to the most minor defects

There are main signs of wear of the gas distribution mechanism (timing belt) that cannot be ignored when operating a car. Vadim Strelbitsky, head of the mechanical repair department at Avilon Kia, spoke about them.

According to him, the timing belt is one of the most vulnerable elements of modern engines, and a sudden break can lead to costly repairs.

The first alarming signal is unstable engine operation. Jerks during acceleration, floating idle speed, or difficult starting often indicate belt wear.

During a visual inspection, it is necessary to pay attention to cracks at the base of the teeth, tears, delamination, and traces of oil - any defects require immediate replacement.

The third important factor is non-compliance with regulations. If there is no data on the timing, experts recommend preventively changing the belt every 60–90 thousand kilometers. Buyers of used cars with an unknown mileage history should do this procedure immediately.

And one more alarming sign is oil leaks in the area of the timing belt cover. Lubricant quickly destroys the structure of the belt and can lead to its sudden breakage.

The expert emphasized that a sudden belt failure often occurs without warning, so if any of these signs appear, it is better to contact the service immediately.
